During the 1970s Wardair Canada operated a fleet of DHC-6 Twin Otters out of Yellowknife, NWT. Demands for a mixed landing gear configuration lead to the design and development of the "Nose Wheel Penetration Ski". This ski is approved for all models of DHC-6 including the long nose versions.
Skyharbor acquired the design
rights in the late 1980's and has produced a number of skis since that time.
Transport Canada approves the installation of each ski on a specific serial number of
DHC-6. This is accomplished by the issuance of an Limited Supplementary Type Approval for
each DHC-6 aircraft planning to operate with this ski. In order to qualify for
approval Skyharbor 95 Aviation Ltd. (the holder of the design approval) applies for an
LSTA to Transport Canada to add the serial number to the list of approved aircraft.
On receipt of approval, installation instructions, are issued by Skyharbor 95 Aviation
Ltd. along with a copy of LSTA certificate.
